The Webinar on the offshore release of Fukushima Daiichi treated cooling water took place on Wednesday 20th October, 10:00-12:00 (CET).

A decade since the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, Fukushima is still setting a precedent for emergency and recovery management. In April 2021, the Japanese government announced its approval of the offshore release of water used to cool the damaged Fukushima Daiichi NPP reactors that has been accumulating in onsite storage tanks.

The planned water release is raising many pressing questions regarding technical issues, radiological effects on the environment, international agreements, ethical considerations, and consequences for post-accident management. Taking up on these questions, this webinar gathered experts from different fields including citizen scientists, radioecologists, ethicists, emergency managers, national authorities, and international organisations.

Speakers:
•    Ms. Yuki Tanabe, Nuclear Accident Response Office, Japan
•    Dr. Thierry Schneider, ICRP, CEPN, France
•    Prof. Jordi Vives i Batlle, SCK CEN, Belgium
•    Mr. Azby Brown, SAFECAST, Japan
•    Prof. Deborah Oughton, CERAD/NMBU, Norway
•    Mr. Christophe Xerri, director of nuclear fuel cycle, waste technology and research reactor, IAEA

Closing words were be given by dr. Hildegarde Vandenhove, MEENAS chair. The webinar was moderated by Joke Kenens, PhD candidate and SHARE member.

The use of unmanned aerial systems (“drones”) to characterize the radiological situation in the aftermath of nuclear or radiological accidents

The UAV webinar will take place on 23rd September 2021, 15:00

In case of a nuclear or radiological emergency the early availability of reliable data on dose rates and contamination levels in the core area of the accident as well as in potentially affected remote areas is of key importance for any governmental decision, like e.g. the implementation of proper countermeasures or the declaration of exclusion zones. Such major decisions may affect thousands of people and may have considerable social and financial impact. To investigate the radiologically contaminated area in the vicinity of a reactor can be too dangerous for people to enter to monitor radiation. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV or commonly named “drones”) carrying radiological detector systems have become more and more available and will become crucial for advancing radiation monitoring. In the webinar the technologies on this topic developed by the IAEA, in the European project “Preparedness” which has recently finished, and its use in Decision Support Systems will be presented by speakers of the IAEA agency, and EURADOS and NERIS platforms.

The programme is as follows :
1. Introduction. U. Stöhlker (EURADOS) and Florian (NERIS) - 10 min
2. IAEA - Current Status in UAV Based Radiation Monitoring Technology. Petr Sladek (IAEA) - 20 min
3. Unmanned aerial detection of radiological data  -  Results of the EMPIR “Preparedness” project. A. Vargas (UPC – EURADOS) - 20 min
4. Use of the monitoring information gathered by the UAV technologies in Decision Support Systems. Geert Olyslaegers (SCK·CEN – NERIS) - 20 min
5. Question and Comments
